The settlement ended a high-profile trial that examined claims that NASCAR’s charter system used anticompetitive practices that harmed racing teams. Phil explained why settlements are a common outcome in complex antitrust cases, saying trials like this one “are very unpredictable for both sides,” and that NASCAR’s close relationships with the teams made a negotiated resolution “all the more logical” compared to risking a jury verdict and appeals.
