Christopher A. Hughes and David S. Miller, partners of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, a leading counselor to global financial institutions and corporations, have been named among the nation’s top lawyers by the United States Lawyer Rankings. Mr. Miller ranked first in the country in Tax while Mr. Hughes took the top position in Intellectual Property. This edition marks Mr. Miller’s seventh consecutive appearance in the leading Tax position; Mr. Hughes, the head of Cadwalader's Intellectual Property Practice Group, has appeared in the rankings for five consecutive years.
The United States Lawyer Rankings was established by a consortium of United States corporations in order to recognize those lawyers who have consistently provided the highest degree of legal representation, so that their members, as well as other businesses and individual clients, can have a degree of guidance when choosing to retain a law firm. Private practice lawyers are nominated for inclusion on a confidential basis by members of the bar, judiciary and by the senior management of large corporate and institutional clients who complete a questionnaire that includes broad inquiries as to an attorney’s general legal ability; the level of an attorney’s negotiating skills; the level of an attorney’s drafting skills; an attorney’s oral advocacy skills; an attorney’s ability to develop creative solutions when faced with a new issue; the level to which an attorney is personally involved to the appropriate level in his/her cases; how an attorney staffs a case or matter; and the level to which an attorney adds to the body of knowledge in his/her practice area.
Mr. Miller advises on the taxation of financial instruments and derivatives, cross-border lending transactions and other financings, international and domestic mergers and acquisitions, multinational corporate groups and partnerships, private equity and hedge funds, bankruptcy and workouts, high-net-worth individuals and families, and public charities and private foundations.
Mr. Hughes is experienced in complex patent, trade secret, and trademark trials and litigation, as well as licensing, intellectual property counseling and IP due diligence in corporate transactions and bankruptcies. His experience spans myriad industries, including computer hardware and software, semiconductors, consumer products and industrial equipment, e-commerce and financial services matters, and a variety of sophisticated medical devices as well as alternative energy technology such as wind turbine systems. He also represents companies seeking to protect and enforce valuable trademarks and trade-dress rights through anti-counterfeiting and infringement actions in courts and before U.S. Customs.
