Cadwalader partner Martin Weinstein authored an op-ed, “The hidden cost of going soft on white-collar crime,” published by The Hill on August 31.
In this piece, Martin highlights how declining federal white-collar enforcement not only enables misconduct but also undermines the solvency of the Crime Victims Fund, which supports more than 4 million victims annually and is funded entirely by federal fines. Despite the success of the 2021 VOCA Fix in replenishing the fund, reduced enforcement and recent budget cuts have left victim services facing devastating shortfalls.
Martin argues that genuine, apolitical enforcement is critical to ensuring victims receive justice and restitution, warning that without it, taxpayers and state programs will continue bearing the burden.
