Jim Carroll's practice is concentrated in the areas of real estate finance and securitization. He represents national, international, and regional financial institutions, investment banks, pension funds, and investors in connection with the financing, acquisition, disposition and leasing of commercial office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, industrial warehouses, merchandise marts, multifamily housing, and residential and planned unit developments, including golf course developments. Jim also represents lenders in warehouse financing of real estate loans and the due diligence of these assets.

In addition, Jim has an active capital markets practice in mortgage loan conduit programs, mortgage pool purchases and sales, as well as multiple property and single-asset real estate securitizations. He led the firm's real estate representation of Confederation Life Insurance Company in its $2 billion real estate securitization, which was the largest deal of its kind consummated at the time and recognized as a "Deal of the Year" by Institutional Investor. He also headed the team that was recognized for "Deal of the Year" in 2006 for the Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village financing, the single largest property financing to date.

Jim has extensive experience in real estate workouts, foreclosures and bankruptcies. Such work includes assets such as hotels, offices, condominiums, multi-family, retail, golf course and industrial properties. Jim represents several special servicers and financial institutions in connection with distressed real estate assets.

Jim formerly served as Managing Partner of the Charlotte office. He also served as an adjunct professor of Law at George Washington University, where he lectured in the area of real estate finance, and as Chair of the Securitization Committee for the American Bar Association's Section of Real Property Probate & Trust Law. Jim has been recognized by Who's Who of Capital Market Lawyers, Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best Lawyers in America, including being named a Banking and Finance Lawyer of the Year in 2017 and Real Estate Finance Lawyer of the Year in 2013.

A graduate of Georgetown University, where he received his B.A., with honors, Jim received his J.D., with honors, from The Catholic University of America.
