Cadwalader partner Peter Malyshev was recently quoted in Risk.net’s profile of Michael Selig, the Trump administration’s nominee to serve as chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Peter, who taught Selig at George Washington University Law School and later worked with him at a previous firm, highlighted Selig’s early and decisive interest in digital assets. He recalled Selig earning an A-plus in his course and noted that even as a law student, “he was very ambitious and very unequivocal about what he wanted to do: cryptos and bitcoins and fintech.”
Peter also described Selig’s early vision for the paradigm shift in digital assets and their discussions around blockchain technology and prediction markets dating back to 2014–2016. He noted that, if confirmed, Selig will face a “huge job” in overseeing emerging digital commodity markets, particularly if pending legislation expands the CFTC’s remit to include spot market oversight and significant new rulemaking responsibilities for digital commodity exchanges, brokers, advisers and clearing.
