City partner, who advises financial institutions, funds and alternative lenders on European and U.S. real estate investments, reinforces the firm’s active lateral hiring strategy

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP today announced that Duncan Hubbard, a leading real estate finance lawyer in the City, will be joining the firm as a partner.

Hubbard’s practice focuses on advising financial institutions, investment funds and alternative lenders on real estate and structured finance transactions throughout the capital stack, as well as loan and portfolio purchase and sale transactions. He advises clients throughout the UK, Continental Europe and the United States and has consistently acted as lead counsel on some of the largest loan portfolio trades between UK clearing banks and insurance companies.

Prior to joining Cadwalader, Hubbard was the Head of the London Real Estate Finance Group at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP.

“Duncan is a market leader in the real estate finance space in London and Europe,” said Pat Quinn, managing partner at Cadwalader. “He is an important addition for us at a time when the real estate markets in the UK and Continental Europe continue to expand. We look forward to having him as part of our transatlantic finance team.”

Added William McInerney, co-chair of Cadwalader’s Finance Group and a leading real estate finance lawyer in the U.S., “There are a number of developments driving increased activity in the London and European real estate finance markets, including a notable increase in activity in the European CMBS market. We see important synergies between Duncan’s platform and our London and U.S. securitization/CMBS practice.”

Hubbard will join a Cadwalader team in London that includes partner Samantha Hutchinson, a preeminent fund finance partner who recently joined the firm from Dentons – where she was head of the firm’s global fund finance practice. Hubbard will work closely with Cadwalader’s top-rated U.S. CMBS team, which has been the market leader among issuer’s counsel for nearly 20 straight years.

“I am very excited to join the Cadwalader team,” Hubbard said. “We continue to see an active UK and European finance market, as well as significant transatlantic opportunities. Cadwalader’s expanding finance practice in London nicely complements my practice and the firm’s market-leading real estate finance capabilities in the U.S.”

Hubbard’s arrival is the latest in a series of important lateral partner and senior lawyer additions in London. In addition to Hubbard and Hutchinson, M&A lawyer Joanna Valentine and disputes lawyer Melis Acuner recently joined the firm.

“We look forward to Duncan’s arrival,” said Gregory Petrick, managing partner of Cadwalader’s London office. “The expansion of our finance practice reinforces our strategic plan to continue to grow our London office with practices where we are dominant and where our transatlantic brand readily transfers.”
