Business Development Manager (Finance Practice)

The Business Development Manager (BDM) is based in  New York and is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of business development and marketing strategies, particularly related to Cadwalader’s market-leading Finance practice, which includes commercial real estate finance, corporate finance and fund finance . This is a highly visible, partner-facing position that will work closely with practice group chairs, individual partners, other members of the business development team and various internal departments. The BDM will have oversight responsibility for the business development team members supporting the practice group(s) s/he supports. All core activities of the BDM center on supporting client relationship building activities, cross-selling opportunities, profile-raising opportunities, and various targeting initiatives with the goal of lead generation.

Responsibilities

  • Consults with the Chair of the Finance practice and the Head of Real Estate Finance to develop and execute business development strategies across the practice;
  • Assists partners in the Finance practice with the development and execution of practice group and individual business development plans and budgets;
  • Proactively identify business development opportunities by monitoring industry and client news and developments and communicating and tracking lead generation opportunities to the attorneys;
  • Understand the Firm’s Finance practice and platform, client base, market opportunities and business development support needs;
  • Conduct and analyze client, prospect, industry and market research to identify new business opportunities and provide attorneys with an up-to-date understanding of the competitive landscape;
  • Work with partners and other attorneys in the Finance practice to implement strategies and tactics to help the Firm develop and expand client relationships and win new business;
  • Work with partners and other attorneys in the Finance practice to maintain and update biographies;
  • Coordinates with other members of the Business Development department and the Communications department to develop and curate social media outreach and press releases;
  • Ensure close coordination with other members of the Business Development department to maximize inter-practice relationships and business development efforts;
  • Oversee and execute the preparation of pitches, presentations, RFP responses, background materials and general practice group marketing materials, both for the Finance practice and for other practices, as necessary;
  • Maintain a pipeline of opportunities and tracking the results of pitches and proposals, including participating in pitch debriefs and tracking and reporting on client feedback;
  • Manage the Finance practice’s website and other digital content, including the practice’s monthly newsletter;
  • Manage profile-raising opportunities, including directory, award and league table submissions;
  • Maintain the Finance practice’s business development “infrastructure” (e.g., experience lists, contact lists, presentations and other written collateral);
  • Proactively identify speaking and sponsorship opportunities;
  • Work with the Events team to execute internal and external events for the Finance practice; and
  • Work with the Communications team to produce internal and external content.

Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years of experience in business development within a law firm or professional services environment, preferably with strong knowledge of real estate finance, leveraged and middle market finance and/or fund finance;
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, liberal arts or related field desired;
  • Proactive business development professional who can lead initiatives;
  • Possess strong knowledge of the transactional legal market;
  • Excellent analytical and research skills and the ability to synthesize actionable reports and business development strategies from a wide variety of data and sources;
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail;
  • Strong “team player” mindset with a “whatever it takes” approach to ensure the overall success of the team;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills with the Microsoft Offices suite of programs;
  • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced business environment with shifting priorities and manage multiple simultaneous projects;
  • Resourceful and exhibits high energy and enthusiasm for legal marketing and business development;
  • Expected to monitor email and be available outside of normal business hours as needed, including occasional weekends; and
  • Willingness to travel, if needed.
