After nearly a year of pro bono advocacy, Charlotte associate Kayla Culver and a team from Haynes Boone successfully secured justice for a human trafficking survivor with a South Carolina conviction that stemmed directly from her exploitation. Through legal research, the team identified a fairly new and underutilized South Carolina statute (S.C. Code Ann. § 16-3-2020(F)) that provides relief for trafficking survivors with convictions that are a direct result from their victimization. The team filed a motion to vacate the client’s conviction and expunge her record, and in early February, the judge granted the motion, signing the order to vacate and expunge. This result marks a significant step toward restoring the client’s dignity, stability and future opportunities. Thank you to Trent Lindsay for serving as supervising partner. |

In early March, our Washington, D.C. office once again welcomed students from H.D. Woodson High School as part of our commitment to expanding access to the legal profession. Partners Sophie Cuthbertson, Cheryl Barnes and Mark Howe; associates James Katz and Emily Wells; Manager of Attorney Development and Legal Recruitment Megan Spratt; and Office Administrator Vicki Little shared insights on their career paths and the many roles that support a leading law firm.

On March 5th, volunteers from Cadwalader and Wells Fargo met in our Charlotte office to staff the Charlotte Triage’s March Lawyer-on-the-Line pro bono event coordinated by Legal Aid of North Carolina. Working under the supervision of Legal Aid attorneys, the volunteers provided legal advice to clients with landlord-tenant repair issues over the phone and will follow up with written advice letters.

The Firm was proud to sponsor the Access To Justice Breakfast held in Charlotte on February 26th, joining members of the legal and business communities in supporting Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and Legal Aid of North Carolina in their mission to expand access to critical legal services.

As part of our Women’s History Month programming, our New York and London offices recently hosted the 10th Annual Girls in Finance Workshop for high school students.
