Women’s Leadership Initiative Housing Clinic in Brooklyn

Volunteers from Cadwalader teamed up with several of our in-house colleagues to staff a Cadwalader Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) Housing Clinic in Brooklyn in late May. The clinic was organized by New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and Legal Hand Crown Heights.

NYLAG has a partnership with the Tenants’ Rights Unit to support New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents with petitions to cure truly unfathomable housing conditions. As a result, dozens of clients reach out to NYLAG weekly seeking support with failed plumbing, vermin, mold, and other necessary home repairs. Unfortunately, due to funding gaps, in most cases, clients have no choice but to represent themselves and navigate the process of commencing a proceeding and appearing in court on their own. At this screening clinic, our attorney and summer associate volunteers met with clients one-on-one and utilized a comprehensive screening tool to complete each client’s intake. At the end of the screening, a NYLAG supervisor conducted a check-out and provided final assessment and advice.
