How do I apply for a lateral associate position? Associates interested in positions at Cadwalader may apply to the firm by forwarding a resume, transcript and writing sample to the Cadwalader office in which you are interested, indicating the desired position and/or practice department. It is expected that each applicant be legally authorized to work in the United States. What are the Firm's procedures for interviewing prospective lateral associates? Associates invited for a full round of interviews at Cadwalader's offices should expect to spend two to three hours meeting with our attorneys and representatives from the recruitment staff. The associate typically will meet with two partners and two associates from the department in which they are applying for a position. Generally, the process extends to a second series of interviews so that the candidate has an opportunity to meet with a number of our attorneys. Do I need to be admitted to the bar of the state in which the Cadwalader office is located? If you are not admitted to the bar of the jurisdiction in which your office is located prior to being hired by the Firm, you must promptly take all steps necessary to take the bar exam and become admitted in that jurisdiction. You may take two weeks of paid leave time (in addition to vacation days) to study for the exam. Cadwalader will reimburse all fees associated with taking the bar and the preparatory courses. What is the bonus structure as it relates to lateral associates? Depending on the month in which a lateral associate joins the Firm, he or she might be eligible for a pro-rated portion of the bonus for his or her class level. Is a lateral associate treated differently from an associate that joins the Firm directly from law school? Part of Cadwalader's culture is to be inclusive. Lateral associates should expect to be fully integrated into their respective departments and into the Firm as a whole. The Firm views lateral associates as it does all other associates when it comes to compensation, benefits and future opportunities. What is Cadwalader's approach to training and developing attorneys? We pair each new lateral associate with a mentor in his or her department to provide professional and personal support. This supplements day-to-day informal mentoring at the Firm, including department lunches, outings, monthly mixers and summer events. By combining coordinated on-the-job experience with formal training, each department maximizes associates' exposure to attorneys, clients and practice areas. Cadwalader's extensive Continuing Legal Education program enables associates to complete CLE requirements in-house, with over 100 department-sponsored courses offered each year. In addition, the Firm encourages attorneys to attend educational programs sponsored by bar associations and other organizations. The Firm has partnered with The City Bar Center for CLE (City Bar), a leading provider of continuing legal education, to offer comprehensive training programs covering virtually all areas of law.
