Jonathan S. Kanter
Jonathan Kanter's practice is focused on antitrust counseling, government and regulatory review of mergers and acquisitions, and litigation. He successfully has represented numerous major corporations in connection with high-profile merger, joint venture, and civil non-merger investigations before the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and state antitrust authorities. Jonathan also regularly represents clients in matters involving overlapping jurisdiction with foreign antitrust authorities, including the European Commission.
Jonathan is a leading expert in issues relating to antitrust and the internet. He is a frequent speaker, author, and media commentator who has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other notable publications. Jonathan represents numerous clients in antitrust litigation and regulatory matters involving the internet, including Microsoft in its acquisition of Yahoo!'s search business, TradeComet LLC in its antitrust litigation against Google, and MyTriggers.com in its antitrust counterclaim against Google.
Other notable representations include Microsoft Corporation in connection with numerous transactions and the landmark U.S. v. Microsoft and N.Y. v. Microsoft antitrust cases, Village Voice Media in its merger with New Times Media, and MGM Mirage in connection with its multibillion-dollar acquisition of Mandalay Resort Group.
Prior to joining Cadwalader, Jonathan worked at the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, where he was a member of the team that reviewed the internet-related aspects of Time-Warner's historical acquisition of AOL. Jonathan also played active roles in the Commission's investigation of numerous other complex mergers and acquisitions, including Exxon/Mobil, BP-Amoco/Arco, and Kroger/Fred Meyer. Following his service at the Federal Trade Commission, Jonathan was with the Antitrust Department of another leading international law firm.
Recognized as one of the up and coming antitrust lawyers in the U.S. by Chambers USA, the 2010 guide described him as "an extremely hard worker who is smart and really digs into the issues - he's a huge asset." Jonathan is an active participant in the American Bar Association's Section of Antitrust Law. He previously served as Associate Editor and was a regular contributor to the Communications Industry Committee's quarterly publication and currently is serving in the Committee's leadership.
Jonathan received his J.D. from Washington University and his B.A., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and New York.
