More than 30 attorneys of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, one of the world’s leading international law firms, are participating in the firm’s tutoring program with the High School for Public Service, located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, N.Y. Each semester, the program pairs Cadwalader lawyers with students in 10th, 11th, or 12th Grade.
Described by its principal as a “city on the hill,” the High School for Public Service, which launched in the fall of 2004, takes a unique approach to education, mixing rigorous academics with community service. Over the course of the semester, the firm will host events that provide the mentors and their mentees with the opportunity to interact. Volunteer mentors undergo an in-depth training session prior to working with the students, and continue to correspond with their students on a regular basis. Debra Brown Steinberg, a litigation partner, leads the firm’s efforts with respect to this mentoring program.
“The firm is proud to have the opportunity to mentor the bright and engaged students of the High School for Public Service,” said Chris White, Cadwalader’s Chairman. “Serving our communities is a commitment the firm is steadfast in fulfilling, and we are honored to work with such an outstanding school.”
Cadwalader began a partnership with the High School for Public Service in 2006. The firm conducts many programs with the school, including hosting an annual young women’s leadership conference, sending attorneys to teach law-related classes, providing paralegals to teach Junior Achievement of New York classes, and participating in the school’s career fairs. Cadwalader also sponsored the students' trip to see a performance of "Twelve Angry Men" and the school's Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert, as well as the Annual Benefit Concert for Haiti Relief, which will be held on February 5, 2009.
