For many years, Cadwalader attorneys have incorporated, advised, and obtained tax-exempt status for hundreds of not-for-profit organizations under the umbrella of the Cadwalader Not-for-Profit Incubator. The Incubator's volunteer associates and paralegals, under the supervision of partner David Miller, share responsibility for counseling the Firm's pro bono not-for-profit clients. These clients are diverse: many are small charities that raise only hundreds or thousands of dollars a year while others include such internationally renowned institutions as The Guggenheim Museum, The State Hermitage Museum in Russia, and the U.S. Friends of The London Philharmonic Orchestra. The tax-exempt purposes are equally wide-reaching, and span the entire spectrum of charitable activities. Among them, our clients are providing relief efforts to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other natural disasters; publicizing and monitoring the achievement of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals; sheltering battered and indigent women; aiding indigent youths in New York's poorest neighborhoods; helping poor and distressed women and children in Tangiers, Morocco; operating not-for-profit art galleries, chamber music orchestras, dance companies, theatre groups, and film production companies; teaching Dominican music; encouraging the Chinese-American community to vote in local, state and national elections; providing sports camps, tutoring and counseling to at-risk youth; promoting environmental awareness in Orthodox Jewish communities; and expanding opportunities for underserved populations in academic debates, among many other important works. These organizations continually seek advice on a broad range of legal and practical issues, including acquiring real estate, managing a deadlocked board, fundraising, minimizing liability, complying with Treasury Department and Patriot Act guidelines for international grants, partnering with other charitable organizations, drafting contracts, and complying with employment guidelines.
