One area in which Cadwalader has been particularly active is in outreach to, and support of, high school students in an effort to build bridges among our communities, high school students and the legal profession.
High School for Public Service Four years ago, with the assistance of the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Cadwalader formed a partnership with the High School for Public Service, located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Currently in its fourth year of operation, the high school continues to receive significant praise for its outstanding approach to education. This partnership offers a variety of opportunities to our attorneys, including both mentoring and teaching. To become a mentor, attorneys are required to participate in a training sessions and to commit to meeting with their mentee for at least one hour each month. At least two mentor/mentee events are held at the Firm each school year. Since January 2005, our attorneys have been afforded the unique opportunity to teach a law-related course of their choosing to the tenth and eleventh grade law classes at the high school. Just as with the mentoring program, these teaching opportunities have been tremendously rewarding for attorneys and high school students alike. In addition to these programs, the Firm co-sponsored the high school students’ trip to see a performance of “Twelve Angry Men” at the American Airlines Theatre and sponsored the high school’s Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert. Several of the high school’s staff planning and training meetings are also now hosted by the Firm.
Highbury Grove School Cadwalader lawyers are receiving training in mentoring skills from the Local Education Authority to enable them to partner with the Highbury Grove School, designated a Business and Enterprise College by the UK Specialist Schools Trust. The school receives extra government funding to further its commitment to raising levels of achievement; equipping students with life-long skills; providing experiences to help them succeed in business; and developing closer links with the community. Our personnel will advise teenage students of the school on career pursuits.
Junior Achievement of New York Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization that brings economics-based education programs into the classroom for students in grades K-12. The curriculum teaches students about financial literacy and work-force readiness. With the assistance and support of Cadwalader, the High School for Public Service now participates in Junior Achievement of New York's High School Program.
The Junior Achievement curriculum is taught by trained Cadwalader volunteers who serve as role models for the students, exposing them to career possibilities and associating education with obtaining professional goals. In addition, through Junior Achievement’s Job Shadowing Program, the firm has hosted students from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School. The students were treated to a tour of our offices followed by a lunch presentation where they learned about job opportunities available in a law firm. Junior Achievement also reaches out to the Firm for attorney volunteers to participate in New York City Department of Education career fairs, including an event that attracted over 900 high school students in Brooklyn. Cadwalader also participated in a firmwide Bowl-a-Thon to raise funds for Junior Achievement of New York.
James Madison High School Cadwalader began its relationship with James Madison High School in 1982 as one of the five founding law firms of the New York City MENTOR program. Since 1982, Cadwalader’s commitment of resources to and its relationship with James Madison High School has grown tremendously. Currently, approximately 25 attorneys and staff participate in Cadwalader’s programs with James Madison. Each year Cadwalader “adopts” the students in the school's Law Institute - a specialized program designed for students with an interest in the law. While Cadwalader hosts lectures, discussion groups and events both at the school and at the Firm’s offices each year, Cadwalader’s commitment continues to extend beyond the mere ordinary.
NYCLA Youth Law Manual The New York County Lawyers' Association (“NYCLA”) and Cadwalader have partnered in producing a legal education curriculum for the NYC Public School system. More than 20 Cadwalader volunteer attorneys have updated and expanded the "Youth Law Manual" that is used throughout the NYC public school system in pre-law-related courses. The Manual, which had not been updated in 10 years, will also be translated into Spanish, Russian, Mandarin and Cantonese and made available to the New York City Department of Education’s English-language learners, giving newcomers the opportunity to learn about the American justice system in a meaningful way.
Paul Robeson High School Cadwalader has teamed with volunteers from Princeton University's Class of 1956 to provide career guidance to students at Paul Robeson High School. Attorneys regularly meet with students to describe on various career paths in the law and in legal administration. The Princeton ’56 team and Cadwalader personnel recently produced a movie entitled "Why College,?" designed to teach high school students about how to choose the right college, the application process ways in which to insure continued matriculated. This partnership also sponsors a cultural awareness program for the school that includes opportunities for the students to attend, among other things, a youth symphony and Carnegie Hall performances.
St. Joseph's Primary School A number of staff members participate in a reading scheme at a local inner-city state primary school. Having received specific training from the Camden Education Business Partnership, volunteers attend the school in a lunch hour each week and work with children aged between five and eight years, assisting with the development of their reading skills. A large proportion of the children come from deprived backgrounds and/or have English as a second or third language.
