As one of the nation's oldest law firms, Cadwalader has a long-standing commitment to professional service in the public interest. From helping found the Friends of the Law Library of Congress in the early 1900s and publishing a practical guide for residents and community groups on using civil laws to combat illegal drug trade in the 1980s, to assisting individuals, families and businesses affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks and implementing a robust high school mentoring program, we are proud of our tradition of giving and dedicated to fulfilling our obligation to assist those with limited access to legal services. We continue this long tradition of public service with numerous and varied pro bono representations in all of our offices in a range of areas, including art, corporate, environmental, litigation, real estate, family law, immigration, dispute resolution, and tax matters.

Our affirmative, ongoing commitment to many organizations and individuals served by our wide-ranging programs includes a diverse group: plaintiffs fighting for their civil rights, families facing eviction from public housing, indigent criminal defendants, not-for-profit groups seeking to improve society through service or the arts, and community service organizations in need of volunteers or other assistance.

Firm in our conviction that everyone is entitled to legal counsel, we also do not shy away from providing representation in connection with controversial or progressive causes or venturing into new legal frontiers, as witnessed by our participation in litigation surrounding constitutional issues, same sex marriage rights, political asylum, and prisoners' rights.
